Khayelitsha Canoe Club
The Khayelitsha Canoe Club was founded by Siyanda Sopangisa, Akhona Sopangisa and Tshepo Ramothukang in 2013. The idea was only to clean the wetlands area because it was being turned into a dumping site by the community . We started by cleaning. We took out chairs, car tyres, etc. Later we saw that we needed something to attract the kids since they were the ones being sent to dump in the wetlands, so canoeing was introduced in 2014. All the boats we have are donations from paddling friends around South Africa, mostly Cape Town.
We are in our 10th year doing what we love and I’m really proud of the team and the hard work, pure commitment in making sure the wetland/environment is looked after. It’s been an uphill battle but nothing in life is easy. The plan is to create sustainable green jobs for the community as we have been volunteering all these years. We will bring back our Tourism side (we use tourism as a funding tool ) so all can benefit. Our ultimate dream is to see the Wetlands Area clean, people and animals enjoying this beautiful natural space in our backyard.
